The term ‘reconciliation studies’ was first proposed by Professor Emeritus Kazuko Mouri, who superintended a large project in Asian Studies at Waseda University.  However, the ‘International Relations Studies towards Reconciliation’, supported by the New Regional Program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, has been ongoing since 2008, with Professor Sumio Hatano as representative. In July 2017, the Creation of Reconciliation Studies Project started in earnest, and we have finally released a full-fledged website. In the future, we hope to use this website to share the results of the project.

To begin, the tab labeled ‘Reconciliation Information’ is a list of links to information on important internal and external events that affect national unity in each country. Though simple, the links are selected from a flood of information. The facts of what has actually happened tend to be completely forgotten. And though the list may be simple, as it is the entrance to the site, it will enable us to easily use various means to imagine the era in which we are living and the spaces engraved by this era. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent the problem of linked articles disappearing from newspaper and wire service companies but to improve the selection of links. We will make improvements to the selection process, after that, we will publish the links. We hope that you can utilize this resource as a means to call to mind regional and global space, in order not to be absorbed by this era, and to not limit our imagination only to the space of the nation state.

Furthermore, we will soon begin successively releasing the “Encyclopedia of East Asia History Disputes ” as an easy-to-understand project outcome. This project focuses on the process through which conflicts regarding history have been politicized, the minimum facts that are shared as historical facts, Small and medium entries focused on persons and events will be written with a consciousness towards these larger motifs of reconciliation studies. We plan, as much as possible, to have links to and commentary on important digital research materials and papers that are published online, from the researchers and experts who are active in the front lines. When it comes to matters of conflicting information about conflicts, we will publish both sides of the argument together. We also intended to create a detailed tree-like image, with keywords attached to the branches, so that knowledge can be traced within the image.

Until that is published, the information linked below explains what Reconciliation Studies is, in an easy-to-understand format with images. We would like to create a system for responding to questions and suggestions from everyone. In the meantime, we deeply appreciate your taking the time to read this message.
